Here's a quiz on places in the world that start with the letter "A". Let's see if you can Ace it.

1. With a maximum depth of only 14 meters (46 feet), the Sea of Azov is the shallowest in the world. This has made it a haven for many types of fish and bird species. The Crimean Peninsula in Ukraine makes up a good portion of its coastline.

2. The Andes have quite a few mountains that are taller than the second highest "A" mountains, which are in the Alaska Range. Aconcagua, Ojos Del Salado, and Huascaran are three of them. They all rise higher than 22,000 feet (6,706m). The Alaska Range has Mt. McKinley, which falls a couple thousand feet short, at 20,322 ft (6,194m).

3. Alsace-Lorraine was a territory annexed by Germany after the Franco-Prussian war in 1871. Before that it was part of the Holy Roman Empire until France gradually made claims on it. For centuries it seemed to be in a constant state of flux between nations that controlled it. Its capital and largest city is Strasbourg.

4. Wood Buffalo National Park is the largest national park in Canada. It's partially occupied by the Peace-Athabasca delta, one of the largest inland deltas in the world. The mountains referenced are the Rockies, which are especially beautiful in Alberta. (If you've been to Banff, you know what I'm talking about). Edmonton and Calgary are the province's two largest cities.

5. Located about 310 miles from the territorial capital Darwin, Arnhem Land is a sparsely populated region teeming with wetlands, wildlife, and indigenous rock art. It is bordered by the Arafura Sea to the north.

6. The Ivory Coast (Cote D'Ivoire) was aptly named after the ivory trade during the age of colonialism. Just to the east of it lies the Gold Coast (now Ghana), which was named after the large amount of gold found in the area. Abidjan is the largest city of Cote D'Ivoire, while Accra is the capital of Ghana.
Australia also has a Gold Coast, but it's not on the equator and it doesn't have an Ivory Coast.
Armenia and Azerbaijan are also the only two countries in the world starting with "A" that share a land border.

7. Astrakhan is in the lower Volta- one of the few dry areas of Russia. Being one of the closest cities to the Middle East, its population is very diverse. People of over a hundred different ethnicities live there.

8. The Antarctic Peninsula is by far the largest on its continent. It extends almost all the way to the tip of South America, where it is separated by the Drake Passage. Geologists consider the peninsula's mountain chain a continuation of the Andes Mountains, with a submarine ridge connecting them across the passage. As if the South American Andes weren't already long enough!

9. Home of the tropical paradises of Tahiti and Bora Bora, the Society Islands are located in French Polynesia in the South Pacific. The Mergui islands are located off the coast of Burma. On a map, the Aleutian islands look like a tentacle sticking out of southwestern Alaska.

10. The Aras touches four countries before joining the Kura River and emptying into the Caspian Sea: Turkey, Armenia, Iran, and Azerbaijan. It meanders through the dry, southern region of the Caucasus Mountains.
